15th International Triennial of Tapestry, Łódź 2016
The Łódź International Triennial of Tapestry is the oldest, biggest in the world and most prestigious exhibition promoting contemporary fiber art. The first edition of the ITT was held in 1972.
The 15th International Triennial of Tapestry is a presentation of the latest developments in the field of artistic textiles all over the world. The exhibition will present a wide spectrum of works, starting from traditional wall-mounted tapestries, through sculptural three-dimensional forms, to woven installations. This edition is dominated by embroidery techniques, used in different varieties, in textiles that have various formats, often joined with other weaving techniques.
The Triennial is an exhibition and a competition that takes place every three years. Apart from artistic criteria, all of the works submitted for the competition had to meet one main technical criterion – be made of raw textile materials, or use the interlacing technique.
Participants were selected by national consultants from the individual countries involved, and by the Program Committee of the 15th International Triennial of Tapestry, which also nominated the participants from Poland.
This year’s edition includes 135 artists from 46 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Spain, Ireland, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Canada, Columbia, Costa Rica, Lithuania, Latvia, Mexico, Moldova, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, the USA, Hungary, Great Britain and Italy.
The international jury consists of world-famous experts and artists engaged in fiber art: Thomas Cronenberg (Germany) – artist, art critic; Yuko Ikeda (Japan) – Senior Curator in the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto; Bruce W. Pepich (USA) – Executive Director and Curator of Collections Racine Art Museum in Racine (Wisconsin), Renata Rozsívalová (Czech Republic) – artist, Bronze Medal winner at 3rd and 14th International Triennial of Tapestry in Łódź, Magdalena Soboń (Poland) – Grand Prix winner – Gold Medal at the 14th International Triennial of Tapestry in Łódź; Małgorzata Wróblewska Markiewicz (Poland), head of the Textile Art Department in the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź.
The exhibition is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, The City of Lodz Office and Friends Of Fiber Art International.
